Ballet National de Marseille

One often hears of the architecture of dance, especially that of Balanchine, but less often does one run into a choreographer whose aesthetic is committed to bringing world class architects to create sets for his work.  Meet Frederic Flamand, artistic director of Ballet National de Marseille, who has created breath-taking dance stages in collaboration with architects such as Thom Mayne (ck sp),  Diller & Scifidio, Dominique Perrault, Ai Weiwei, Zaha Hadid.  After travelling to Milan to see the company, we presented the idea of bringing Flamand and Hadid’s collaboration, “Metapolis II,” to Lincoln Center Festival under director Nigel Redden. Nigel travelled to Marseille to see the work; He agreed to present it.  We worked out the contract, and oversaw the publicity and marketing campaign for its season at the New York State Theater, where it drew enormous audiences and great visibility in the summer of 2007.
