Kings of Dance

Ballet may be a woman, according to Balanchine, but producer Sergei Danilian decided to give men an equal opportunity.  He employed four of the world’s greatest stars from four of the world’s greatest ballet companies: Angel Corella (American Ballet Theatre), Johan Kobborg (Royal Ballet), Ethan Stiefel (American Ballet Theatre) and Nikolay Tsiskaridze (Bolshoi Ballet) to prove his point.  The line-up of choreographers was equally dazzling: premieres by Stanton Welch, Roland Petit, Tim Rushton, Nils Christe, and Christopher Wheeldon.  For four days in 2006, February 23-26, the men took over the stage at City Center and seduced the imagination of its audiences, as well as Gia Kourlas, who wrote an advance story on it for The New York Times.
