Pilobolus Dance Theatre
I feel like I’ve known Pilobolus since childhood, having seen the company first at the American Dance Festival in the early ‘70’s, and then working with the troupe for over two decades as a Joyce Theater presentation. Since the company is so telegenic and audience-friendly, securing TV coverage was far easier than it is with most dance companies. When Regis and Kathy Lee still hosted the 9am ABC morning show, the dancers from Pilobolus were annual guests. Aside from the thrill of watching the troupe perform for camera at the ABC studios, there was the additional excitement of catching sight of a 7-foot guy passing by the Green Room. I put down the bagel I was buttering and stared. That 7-foot guy was Patrick Ewing! Pilobolus was also profiled on CBS Sunday Morning, and I managed to convince the producer to shoot one of the company’s shows down at the American Dance Festival. Since ADF was also a client, it made it a two for one. Good Day New York, Channel 5’s morning show, anchored their cast at The Joyce, where the Pilobolus dancers defied gravity beginning at 7am.
