Nederlands Dans Theater
The dancers are absolutely gorgeous. Their commitment is absolute. The company hadn’t been to New York in nine years, and in that space of time gained new artistic leadership: Paul Lightfoot (artistic director) and Sol Leon. (resident choreographer) Lightfoot and Leon work as Siamese twins. They are joined at the soul. Not a single work that they create is made without the other. I didn’t think it would be a tough sell. While I managed to secure an Arts & Leisure story in The Sunday Times, I was confronted with great resistance by the dance press, which had had little exposure to their work. The audiences at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, however, loved it so unabashedly, they jumped out of their seats and showered them with ovation after ovation. The divide between audience and critics continues to fascinate me.
