Richard Alston Dance Company

It was through Art Becofsky, Merce Cunningham’s brilliant former executive director, that I first met Richard Alston, who was the artistic director of Ballet Rambert at the time.   That was in the late fall of 1985. Apple-cheeked with a mop of curly hair and a ready smile for all the world, he seemed too normal to be as brilliant and original a choreographer as he is. We handled the company’s debut at City Center the following January.  After leaving Rambert, Richard began his own company for which we handled the publicity and marketing each time it came to the United States.  His dances are elegantly mysterious. I watch them with wonder.  Alastair Macaulay writes ravishingly about Richard’s rare musicality and wit, which deepens my understanding of the ways Alston achieves his understated wizardry.
