JAMES SEWELL BALLET AT THE JOYCE THEATER, JANUARY 20–25,
2004
One of the dance world’s best-kept secrets is
James Sewell Ballet. But when the Minneapolis-based company of eight
dancers makes its Joyce Theater debut, January 20–25, it is

premiere of “Barrage.” Through the dancers’ improvised
interruptions of classic ballets, “Barrage” balances
despair and optimism, loss and control, order and chaos. The season
will also include “Moving Works,” which was seen in
New York in 2001, and one of Sewell’s first ballets, “Loves
Remembered.”

THIRTY-FIVE CANDLES TO SHINE
LAR LUBOVITCH DANCE COMPANY AT WASHINGTON SQUARE
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, MAY 10–22, 2004
Lar Lubovitch Dance Company often shows up in surprising places
and pulls off equally surprising things. So why should the company’s
35th anniversary be any different? Lubovitch, whose troupe has performed
in major venues throughout the world, will celebrate the occasion
with two weeks at the Washington Square United Methodist Church,
May 10–22. The biggest news is the world premiere of a full-evening
work (title to come). The work, incorporating aspects of Lubovitch’s
past dances while hinting at new directions, is being designed to
be seen through a series of scrims. The accumulative effect will
not be unlike an artist’s pentimento, the trace that a painter
leaves that reveals the history of the work. Composer Richard Woodbury
has been commissioned to create an original sound score. The scenic
elements will be created by Obie-winning Wendall K. Harrington,
who also designed Lubovitch’s “Othello.” Tony
Award-winning Brian MacDevitt will design the lights.
