BILL T. JONES RECEIVES THREE MAJOR AWARDS THIS SPRING
Choreographer Bill
T. Jones is proving himself to be a triple threat this spring. Today
(Monday), it was announced that he has been chosen to receive the
annual Wexner Prize, given to an outstanding artist who has been
“consistently original, influential and challenging to convention.”
It comes with a $50,000 prize.
Also, today (Monday), he will be
honored at a gala at Aaron Davis Hall, along with Abbey Lincoln,
Eddie Palmieri, and Miguel Algarin, with the Harlem Renaissance
Award. The award, which has no cash prize, honors “artists
who have compiled an enduring body of work exemplifying the spirit
of the Harlem Renaissance.”
And then on July 17, Jones will receive
the prestigious Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award,
which is given to modern dance artists for their lifetime contribution
to the art form. The prize comes with a cash award of $35,000.
Over the years, Jones has been honored
with almost every major arts award. Among the most prestigious are
the 1994 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2003 Dorothy and Lillian Gish
Prize and the 1993 Dance Magazine Award. In 2000, The Dance Heritage
Coalition named Jones “An Irreplaceable Dance Treasure.”
