TRIPLE PLAY
PITTSBURGH BALLET THEATRE MAKES NEW YORK DEBUT AT THE JOYCE THEATER, MARCH 29–APRIL 3, 2005
It’ll be a night of New York premieres—three in all—when the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre celebrates its New York City debut with a week of performances at The Joyce Theater, March 29–April 3. In “Hungry Heart…‘we all have one’!!,” British choreographer Derek Deane uses Bruce Springsteen’s music to create a series of vignettes about a cast of colorful characters drifting through a diner. Kevin O’Day employs structured improvisation in “Sting/ING Situations,” a work for 10 dancers. Given the title, it’s no surprise that Sting is the composer of choice. And in a move away from his usual pop music fare, Dwight Rhoden has turned to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony to accompany “7th Heaven,” which combines classical vocabulary and contemporary movement.
Curtain Times: Tuesday–Saturday, March 29–April 2 at 8pm; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm
Ticket Price: $40

SEVEN-YEAR ITCH
DAVID DORFMAN DANCE CONCLUDES 20th ANNIVERSARY FESTIVITIES WITH WORLD PREMIERE AT JOYCE THEATER,
MAY 31–JUNE 5, 2005
Sometimes called a revolutionary with a sense humor, David Dorfman, athlete-turned-choreographer who also offers a contemplative look at the world, will bring his troupe of four dancers to The Joyce Theater, May 31–June 5. One highlight is the premiere of “New Traditions: An Older Testament,” set to an original score by Frank London of The Klezmatics. The work questions what it means to be a Jew in today’s world. Also planned is last year’s hit, “Lightbulb Theory,” a meditation on death in which the dancers ask: “Is a light bulb better if it flickers out or suddenly goes dark?” A new dance is also in the works. And for the numerically-minded: The engagement closes the company’s 20th anniversary year, while marking its first performances at The Joyce in seven years.
Curtain Times: May 31–June 5, Tuesday–Saturday at 8pm; Sunday at 7:30pm; Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2pm
Ticket Price: TBD

CURRANT EVENTS
SEÁN CURRAN COMPANY PLAYS THE JOYCE THEATER,
JUNE 7–12, 2005
Give him any piece of music, and choreographer Séan Curran will find a new take. For instance, “Art/Song/Dance,” one of the dances that he will present as part of Séan Curran Company’s Joyce Theater season, June 7–12, will be danced to a series of 20th century American poems set to original music by Ricky Ian Gordon, performed live by Gordon and four singers. And then there will be “Sonata,” set to Janecek’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano,” which evokes the music’s sense of community to recall the tragedy of 9/11. A third highlight of the season will be ”Companion Dances,” a duet both performed and choreographed by Curran and long-time company member Heather Waldon-Arnold and set to rock music by Young Marble Giants, Radiohead, Solex and Jesse Manno.
Curtain Times: Tuesday–Saturday, June 7–11 at 8pm; Sunday, June 12 at 7:30pm; Saturday matinee at 2pm
Ticket Price: TBD

STRAVINSKY AND ALL THAT JAZZ
PASCAL RIOULT DANCE THEATRE RETURNS TO THE JOYCE THEATER, JUNE 14–19, 2005
Inspired by his ongoing love of Stravinsky’s music, Pascal Rioult presents two recent dances to the composer’s scores at The Joyce Theater, June 14–19. The first is a world premiere tentatively titled “Noces” (or “Wedding”), after the 1914 Stravinsky score, “Les Noces.” In it, Rioult deconstructs social and religious wedding rituals to penetrate the conflicting feelings of this traditional, sacred rite of passage. Also on the program is last year’s “Firebird,” set to the score inspired by the ancient Russian tale of magic and transformation. In Rioult’s dance, the Firebird is a young child whose innocence and curiosity resurrect the dehumanized creatures surrounding her. Also in the works is a completely re-choreographed version of Rioult’s “Kansas City Orfeo Suite,” which premiered in 1996. Though the dance will look different, the theme–an updated version of the classic Greek myth of Orfeo–and the music, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Kansas Orchestra leader Bennie Moten, remain the same.
Curtain Times: Tuesday, June 14 at 7:30pm; Wednesday–Saturday, June 15–18 at 8pm; Sunday, June 19 at 7:30pm; matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2pm
Ticket Price: $38

NO TIME OFF
BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE DANCE COMPANY PREVIEWS NEW WORK AT AARON DAVIS HALL, JUNE 16–18, 2005
You’d think with all the new work he created for his company’s 20th anniversary, Bill T. Jones might want a week off. Guess again. Although the Aaron Davis Hall programs, June 16–18, are not set in stone, at this point the plan is to present previews of excerpts from Jones’s next major work, “Blind Date.” This multimedia dance, accompanied by an original score and text, affirms and boldly questions the meaning of patriotism. Jones also promises a look at some other new works now in progress. Stay tuned.
Curtain Times: Thursday–Saturday, June 16–18 at 7:30pm
Ticket Price: $25–$35
