JOYCE THEATER, FEBRUARY 14–19
London’s Richard Alston Dance Company celebrates
its return to The Joyce Theater, February 14–19 with a spectacular
show of New York premieres set to music by a diverse group of
composers. “Gypsy Mixture” is a street party filled
with exhilarating dancing to Balkan gypsy music remixed by an
international bevy of DJs. In dramatic contrast is Alston’s
“Fever,” set to Monteverdi madrigals and suggesting
the sensuality and golden warmth of the Italian spirit. Also on
the program is “Such Longing,” a wistful, gently melancholy
dance performed to the lyrical Chopin Nocturnes and Etudes played
live at The Joyce by pianist Jason Ridgway.

PIROUETTE À LA YOGA
JAMES SEWELL BALLET SURPRISES AT JOYCE THEATER, APRIL 4–9
James Sewell makes unusual demands on his Minneapolis-based
ballet company. Witness the three New York premieres scheduled
for James Sewell Ballet’s Joyce season, April 4–9.
Choreographed in collaboration with his dancers, Sewell’s
“Involution” draws on yoga and Qigong to explore the
flow of energy through the body to suggest an evolution toward
the unification of a splintered group. The music is by Thomas
Newman. Accompanied by Franz Schubert’s “Sonata for
Arpeggione and Piano in A minor,” Sewell’s “Anagram”
is structured as a series of sections connected through improvisation.
And then there is the mystery ballet, “The Guy Noir Ballet”
in which Sewell merges text with movement, with Garrison Keillor
narrating the story of his detective Guy Noir. The accompanying
music is a jazz score.
Curtain time: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday April
4, 5, 7 & 8 at 8pm; Thursday & Sunday, April 6 & 9
at 7:30pm; Saturday & Sunday, April 8 & 9 at 2pm; Tickets:
