is certain about Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company’s
outdoor performance at Battery Park on September 20: The air will
be charged with the electricity of some of the most exciting choreography
and dancing around.

PARSONS DANCE COMPANY AT
THE JOYCE THEATER
October 22-November 3
The Parsons Dance Company promises a feminine edge this season,
which is to say that among its Joyce Theater highlights will be
premieres by former Paul Taylor principal Lila York and Parsons
dancer Kate Skarpetowska. There will also be new dances by Parsons:
"Too Many Cooks" and his most recent duet "Tango."
Also scheduled are the ever-riveting "Caught" and last
year’s hit "Kind of Blue," among others.

BALLET BIARRITZ AT THE JOYCE

Whether visionary impresario Sergei Diaghilev could have forecasted
Thierry Malandain’s radical transformations of Ballet Russes
classics will be forever unknown. Would he have approved? He certainly
would be fascinated. Audiences all over Europe have applauded nonstop
the quartet of classics that Malandain has re-invented with wit
and charm: "L’après midi d’un faune,"
"Pulcinella," "Boléro" and "Le spectre
de la rose." The dances will receive their
New York premieres when Ballet Biarritz makes its New York debut
at The Joyce
Theater, November 5-10.

GARTH FAGAN DANCE AT THE

Garth Fagan Dance, that spectacular ensemble of performers from
Rochester, NY, will again be at The Joyce Theater where it will
present the world premiere of a full company work "We: 6 &
9" as well as last year’s "Music of the Line /Words
in the Shape." Also expect a collection of other greatest hits
by Lion King choreographer Garth Fagan.

BALLET HISPANICO AT THE JOYCE

December 3-15
Two premieres, "Slices" by Broadway star Ann Reinking
(her second original work for Ballet Hispanico) and "Cecilia"
by company principal Pedro Ruiz (his third for the company) are
among the highlights of Ballet Hispanico’s annual engagement
at the Joyce Theater, December 3-15. "Slices" is set to
music by Philip Glass, Santana and Israel Kamakawio’ole, and
"Cecilia" is set to Ernesto Lecuona and his band The Lecuona
Cuban Boys. "Club Havana" and "Besame" are also
among the season highlights.

"MERCY"
AT BAM’S HARVEY THEATER
December 3 –7
BAM’s Next Wave Festival will present "mercy," a
collaboration between Meredith Monk and sculptor, installation artist
Ann Hamilton, which was met with rave reviews and standing ovations
during its national tour last year.
A haunting multi media, music-theater work using Monk’s signature
wordless singing and Hamilton’s use of miniature cameras,
"mercy" is a stunning meditation on humanity’s spirituality,
compassion, empathy and mercy.

DOUG VARONE AND DANCERS AT THE OHIO THEATER
December 4-22
The Mammoth Caves of Kentucky provide the stunning video backdrop
for Doug Varone’s new full-evening work, "The Bottomland,"
at the Ohio Theater, December 4-22. Limón principal Nina
Watts is guest artist in the work, which in the first half observes
life in a rural community and in the second half, life beneath its
surface. Part one is set to songs by country western singer Patty
Loveless, and part two is set to an original score by Canadian composer
Gaetan Leboeuf.

DAVID GORDON PICK-UP COMPANY

The fragile, and sometimes invisible line between stage life and
reality is the subject of David Gordon’s "Private Lives
of Dancers," whose first installment was shown at Danspace
last January. Resonating with mystery, wit and humanity, the theater
and dance work will premiere in its entirety at The Joyce Theater,
February 18-23.

PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY
BRINGS NEW DANCES TO CITY CENTER
March 4-16
Paul Taylor has done it again (!), creating yet one more masterful
dance, "Promethean Fire," which will receive its New York
premiere during the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s annual City
Center season, March 4-16. Plans are also underway for a new work
set to barber shop music; additionally, there will be revivals of
such masterpieces as "A Field of Grass," "Last Look,"
"Cascade," "Images," "Offenbach Overtures,"
"Esplanade," plus last year’s "Black Tuesday."

March 4-7
San Francisco choreographer Joe Goode returns to The Joyce Theater,
March 4-7, with the New York premiere of " What the Body Knows,"
a work incorporating dance, song, the spoken word and a live video
feed. His company, Joe Goode Performance Group, will also present
"Doris in a Dustbowl," which juxtaposes the personal crises
of characters with natural disasters and "Take Place,"
an exploration of a search for identity in a world without definition.

EIFMAN BALLET OF ST. PETERSBURG
AT CITY CENTER
April 4-20
"Who’s Who?" is both the title and underlying theme
of Boris Eifman’s wild, new work that the Eifman Ballet of
St. Petersburg will present during its sixth annual City Center
season, April 4-20. The work tells of two Russian émigré
ballet dancers, who escape the Mafia in Brooklyn only to wind up
dancing en travesti in Manhattan, and falling in love accidentally.
The ballet is set to Scott Joplin and Samuel Barber as well as to
the big band music of Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Dave Brubeck and
Duke Ellington. Also scheduled for the season is Eifman’s
magical retelling of the tale of "Pinocchio."

PASCAL RIOULT DANCE THEATER AT THE JOYCE THEATER
April 17-20
To celebrate its return to The Joyce Theater, April 17-20, Pascal
Rioult Dance Theatre will present a new work by Rioult set to music
by Pulitzer prize-winner Aaron Kernis. Also on the boards is "Harvest,"
which Rioult created ten years ago for the Martha Graham Dance Company.
"Wien" and "Boléro" will round out the
season.

INBAL PINTO DANCE COMPANY
BRINGS FANTASY FROM ISRAEL TO THE JOYCE THEATER
April 22-27
Israel’s Inbal Pinto Dance Company has conjured a world of
incandescent magic in "Oyster," a full-evening fantasy
created by Ms. Pinto and her cohort Avshalom Pollack, who also,
along with Zahi Patish, digitally arranged the music. The engagement
marks the company’s Joyce Theater debut.

RENNIE HARRIS PUREMOVEMENT
AT THE JOYCE THEATER
May 13-18
Rennie Harris Puremovement returns to The Joyce Theater, May 13-18,
with the New York premiere of "Facing Mekka," a full-evening
work that fuses elements of hip-hop, house, and various styles of
B-boy in its exploration of the roots of hip-hop. Featuring a cast
of 17 dancers, two deejays, live percussion and a recorded sound
score created by long-time Harris collaborator Darrin Ross, the
work also includes a new Butoh-like hip hop solo for Harris.

HUBBARD STREET DANCE CHICAGO

May 27-June 8
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago will celebrate its 25th anniversary
with a two-week engagement at The Joyce Theater, May 27-June 8,
where it promises at least one new work. (The exact repertory was
still a work in progress at press time). Trained in ballet, theatrical
jazz and modern dance, the company of 20 versatile performers is
now headed by former Netherlands Dance Theater dancer Jim Vincent
who assumed the role of artistic director from Lou Conte who founded
the company.
