AT DANCE THEATER WORKSHOP “FAMILY MATTERS”
MATINEES KICK OFF SEPTEMBER 18 WITH
“IT’S ALL RELATIVE: KINFOLK TALES AND TRAILS”

Assumptions are different at Dance Theater Workshop. In “Family Matters,” for instance, Dance Theater Workshop’s series for younger audiences and their grown-ups, children are talked up to.
Case in point: The opening of the fall lineup, “It’s All Relative: KinFolk Tales and Trails,” takes place Saturday, September 18 at 2pm. Brimming with music, enlivened by dance and spiced with magic, the hour-long program is comprised of four original works, each featuring a different kind of familial relationship and each employing real-life relatives.
And now, on with the show: The afternoon is heralded with a burst of music and song performed by mother and daughter duo Rachelle Garniez (claviola and accordion) and her mother Nancy Garniez (piano).
In her “Fussy Sasa,” Maura Donahue wrestles with her 10-month-old baby Sasa on the floor as the choreographer tries to create a new dance for two other performers, while her husband, Perry Yung, calmly accompanies on a flute.
“Fossil in Amber,” created by Peggy Peloquin in collaboration with her sixth grade daughter Claire Hart, examines the shifting tensions and intimacy between them. Mother and daughter both perform. Claire’s father, composer C. Hyams Hart created the music for the work. Another family member Jay Weissman, husband of choreographer Rebecca Stenn, co-created the score for Stenn’s “Walt’s Travels.” The work blends dancing that suggests various forms of transportation (cars, water, subway and skating) performed to an original score by Jay Weissman and Dave Eggar.
Keely Garfield’s madcap imagination is given great play in “A Fishy Tale,” whose characters include a mermaid (Garfield), her sailor pal (Rachelle Garniez), and Neptune (Lawrence Goldhuber), King of the Sea. While the trio is played by adults, Garfield’s kids (ages four and ten) make guest appearances.
The afternoon will conclude with a parade celebration that includes the performers and inspired audience members led by Garfield.
“Family Matters” is curated by Keely Garfield and Peggy Peloquin.
Future lookout: The “Family Matters” series continues with two other shows this fall: “World Beats, Feats and Treats,” October 16 at 2pm; and “Femmes and Fellas,” November 20 at 2pm.
PLEASE NOTE: The curtain time for the September 18th performance of “It’s All Relative: KinFolk Tails and Trails” is at 2pm. Tickets for children are $10, and $20 for adults. All tickets may be purchased at the box office, by calling 212-924-0077 or online at www.dtw.org. Dance Theater Workshop is located at 219 West 19th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues.
